================ ARTICLES & MISC =================
Gotta love all the jumping, running and sprinting that goes on at the Milpitas @ Gunn Dual on Thursday. Thanks Duke for the pics to share.
St Francis Invite had some phenominal marks and competition. Malcolm Slaney photos can be found here.
The "Father of Crystal Springs" (Bob Rush) passed away Saturday morning (Mar 14th) at 90 years old. He, along with Loren Lansbury (Carlmont), created the current Crystal Springs XC course in 1971 (history to follow). Seen here in his earlier years coaching the CSM teams and at 90 running the last 600m of the Crystal course. A man with many stories that he left up to you to decide if they were so or not. Following is what he told me on the creation of the Crystal Springs course,
Bob Rush (Father of Crystal Springs course) lived in Grass Valley where in High
School he learned to build Fire Trails from XC/Track coach/teacher Roger Snipe.
In 1952 Coach Snipe was the HS Forestry teacher and his team/class built an XC course
at the local fairgrounds. Bob worked with the area Fire Department in Grass Valley for 12 years.
This served him well many years later when the development of the Crystal Springs course
was being laid out. After working with Loren Landsbury (Carlmont) for a course design,
Bob went down to the Belmont Fire Department and asked if they’d like some training
and practice on how to build Fire Trails. They told him they’d get back to him if
they could get approval. Feeling it was a dead end, Bob didn’t expect anything to
happen in the near future if at all. The next day Bob got a call from Belmont FD
that said they had the approval and equipment (bulldozer) so could they get on it
the next morning. Off they went with Bob leading the way by walking thru all the
tall grass with new course map in hand. There were no scrub bushes back then for
the area used to be mowed for the tall grass and sold for cattle feed, the scrub
brush moved in years later when the mowing stopped. Originally there was not
going to be a dropdown right before Cardiac Hill and hence there would be no Cardiac
Hill, they were going to skirt around it by going to the right and hook up to what is
now the JC inner circle of the course. When the day was done, Crystal Springs XC
Course had been born. The course is built on approximately 199 acres.
He is someone who I feared in high school but was inspired as a coach, who shared his knowledge and love of coaching & running with me. More pictures of Bob can be found here - RIP. Bob Rush Obit from San Mateo Daily.
The best weather the RustBuster Invite has ever had! Boys 100 saw some great early season marks while Amaya Bharadwaj (Paly) breaks the stadium record in the 3200 by 36 seconds with a 10:20.52 clocking. Pictures thanks to "The Duke" & Malcolm Slaney.
A history throwback for the day... Franklin Stadium in 1967, home of the Penn Relays. And link for Paly Coach Hod Ray (1921-1951) where he coached Football, BasketBall, Baseball & Track (the Paly field is named after him).
From 1977 where Carl Florant (Berkeley/Paly'73) is in full flight handing off to Keith Taylor in the 4x1. Carl is still ranked #11 with his 13.6h (13.93c) time in the 110HH on the All-Time CCS list.
1956 and this is what Stanford Univ looked like - Sunken Diamond, Angell Field, Campus. Lot's changed in 70 years.
Computers make End Of Season lists (all lists really) a breeze to maintain and distribute but back in the early 70's (and further back) you had to find a coach to volunteer to maintain the lists if the data was sent in. Here is a request from "said" coach to get "said" data.
The indoor tracks of today are a thing of beauty. Now let's go back to 1971 when some indoor tracks were made of DIRT (12 laps to the mile) and the stagger/race start lines were painted on the wall - check out this letter to T&F News.
Being at today's Los Gatos All-Comer meet brought me back to when brothers Rick & Leroy Milam used to help run these meets. Rick helped Willie Harmatz start these meets in 1979 and Leroy was a long time starter. Oh, and there was an American Mile Record Holder hanging around as well.
The All-NorCal team with the Grade Runners of the year displayed. Alijah Murillo (Branham), Cooper Stream (Vacaville), Elias Thronson (Davis), Liam Tassa (Mt View), Amaya Bharadwaj (Paly), Farah Allen (Branson), Ellison Williams (Turlock), Alyssa Gutierrez (St Francis-Sac)
