================ ARTICLES & MISC =================
As many of you have heard, the West Valley College Track is scheduled to be removed starting this fall and replaced with a new PE/Wellness center. There is a plan to build a smaller track that might possibly be 200m in the area just east of the track next to the volleyball courts, but that project would not complete until around the end of 2028. This is disappointing news to most of us as the track is a vital part of our club's Saturday and weekday workouts. A number of people have asked about what can be done. A few club members have already been in contact and/or met with people including the WVC chancellor to get the information up to this point. Here is a brief summary up to this point:
1) Voters passed Measure W in 2018 which included a line for "Health and Wellness Center" without any detailed plans
2) Board Resolution No 23091204 in Sept 2023 approved "New Construction" without detailed plans and no mention about the removal of the track being an option.
3) Plan developed to upgrade the current PE buildings, but sometime in early/mid 2025 they realized that the scope of that work would end up costing $25-30M more than building a new building. At that point they scoped the track area and made the decision to go with that location in Aug 2025. This was reportedly discussed in public board meetings after that date.
4) They were not aware of any organized WVC or outside groups that used the track and had formal relationships with the college, so there was no one they knew to notify about this.
5) They would like the new track to be something that is of good quality and would like suggestions from the club about its design; they plan to have a follow-up meeting in the fall to discuss.
The summary from those of us who met with the Chancellor, is that the project is going forward and that anything we do at this point would at best stall it and end up costing them more money. However, we do think it's fair to say that this will affect how future requests put before the community voters will be considered. Since the meeting with the chancellor, a number of other community members have also voiced concerns about the removal of the track and the process and communication that has led up to this point. A couple of them would like to have their concerns voiced in the next board meeting. Unlike the meeting a few of us had with the Chancellor, concerns raised in the board meeting go on the record, which is wanted by at least a couple people. Below is information copied from community member SerKuang Chen (serkuang@yahoo.com) regarding the upcoming board of trustees meeting. You can contact her for more information or reach out to your trustees (elected officials) if you have questions or concerns. The next West Valley-Mission Board of Trustees meeting is on Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00PM, at the West Valley College Board Room; people can also join via Zoom (https://www.wvm.edu/calendars/events/#event-details/dae4419b-63cc-47a6-8940-558ff91d2757). People can submit a public comment beforehand (https://www.wvm.edu/board/public-comments.html), but that is not required to speak at the meeting.
Clara Adams (formerly of N Salinas HS) sues CIF to reinstate her as 2025 State 400m Champion.
Not a CCS All-Time Record... a CCS Champion. His 62-07 is shy of his 65-03.5 which is less than 7 inches away from the record set in 1967. Case still has another week to improve. More CCS Pictures can be found here.
Lots of action this past weekend at the CCS Trials. Two athletes per lane? Must be the start of the 4x800. Records will be coming down in the sprints at the CCS Finals. It takes "focus" to get to State. Pictures Here
SCVAL Post-season Track Meeting: is Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00pm at Santa Clara Admin building (same as usual). If you have anything you would like to put on the agenda, please email Julie by Monday, May 18th, by 8:00pm.
I always find it fun when I find articles about previous coaches from Lynbrook HS. Like Jeff Fishback who was an Olympian, a Bay To Breakers winner and a 10-mile Relay World Record holder with a 42:09 time (two guys alternating repeat miles - that time is a 4:13 mile pace for 5 of them) in 1961. And Verne Thornberg taking 16th place in this National AAU meet in 1951. Fun stuff.
SCVAL League re-alignment for DAL & ECL Divisions (Monta Vista moves to DAL, Homestead moves to ECL).
Quick times at the DAL League Finals. Relays started and ended the day with some 40 year old meet records broken by Daniela Hughes (LA) and Jordan Johnsson (Paly) in between. Love this shot (pun) of a Viking "putter". Meet pictures are here.
In 1965 it was very common for the Varsity victor to receive a kiss from the meet "Queen". What wasn't common was the chaos that happened to determine the SPAL League champ in both the Varsity and "C" division - read the story here.
Always fun to finish off the dual season with a 4x100 Any Baton relay. And the day before was the Gunn/Paly City Meet - thanks for the pics Malcolm. Faces in the crowd, or on the field, at the PA City Meet.
Bob Rush, Celebration of Life details, June 6th.
Arcadia never disappoints. Here is a meet synopsis on CCS records that went down by Jordan Cheng (former Mt View coach). Lawrence Onyekewe (Menlo) - sophomore 300h record (37.58) Case Jacobson (St francis) - no record but furthest throw since 1967 (65'3.5) Valley Christian (sShant Babyan, *Boston Maruccillio, sDevin Adams, sIsaiah Muse) - 4x200 record (1:26.86), old record from Menlo-Atherton 1960 of 1:27.03c - members were: Dick Burns-12, Bob Beckstrom-12, Willie Waller-12, Jim Cheatham-11 Bellarmine (**Mizan Ackbar, sHarrison Webb, **Samuel Haven, sJosh Haven) - 4x110HH/shuttle relay (59.12) Ackbar 15.4, Webb 14.7, S Haven 14.8, J Haven 14.2 They broke their own record from 2006, also at Arcadia. Team members then were Thomas Phillips (11), Jalai Beauchman (12), Joseph Mirabeau (12), Napoleon Greene (12), time 1:02.19 Amaya Bhardawaj (Palo Alto) - ccs 3200 record (10:01.93) Jordan Johnsson (Palo Alto) - soph. 100m record (10.44 +2.8) That's all I noticed. Liam Tassa (mountain view) got pretty close to the frosh mile/1600 record. My-oh-my, CCS will be lots of fun this year!
Valley Christian anchors to a new CCS Record in the 4x100 Relay with a 40.97 mark. Tumbles sometimes happen at the Stanford Invite. Lots of focus for this Lancer baton pass. Slaney pictures can be found here. VC team members are: Isaiah Muse, Savi Carr, Shant Babayan, Riley Mcelvane
A good size lead pack. "Putting" it out there. Diving for the finish paid off with a win in her 100H heat at the De Anza-Wilcox Invite. Duke's pictures can be found here.
Gotta love all the jumping, running and sprinting that goes on at the Milpitas @ Gunn Dual on Thursday. Thanks Duke for the pics to share.
St Francis Invite had some phenominal marks and competition. Malcolm Slaney photos can be found here.
The "Father of Crystal Springs" (Bob Rush) passed away Saturday morning (Mar 14th) at 90 years old. He, along with Loren Lansbury (Carlmont), created the current Crystal Springs XC course in 1971 (history to follow). Seen here in his earlier years coaching the CSM teams and at 90 running the last 600m of the Crystal course. A man with many stories that he left up to you to decide if they were so or not. Following is what he told me on the creation of the Crystal Springs course,
Bob Rush (Father of Crystal Springs course) lived in Grass Valley where in High
School he learned to build Fire Trails from XC/Track coach/teacher Roger Snipe.
In 1952 Coach Snipe was the HS Forestry teacher and his team/class built an XC course
at the local fairgrounds. Bob worked with the area Fire Department in Grass Valley for 12 years.
This served him well many years later when the development of the Crystal Springs course
was being laid out. After working with Loren Landsbury (Carlmont) for a course design,
Bob went down to the Belmont Fire Department and asked if they’d like some training
and practice on how to build Fire Trails. They told him they’d get back to him if
they could get approval. Feeling it was a dead end, Bob didn’t expect anything to
happen in the near future if at all. The next day Bob got a call from Belmont FD
that said they had the approval and equipment (bulldozer) so could they get on it
the next morning. Off they went with Bob leading the way by walking thru all the
tall grass with new course map in hand. There were no scrub bushes back then for
the area used to be mowed for the tall grass and sold for cattle feed, the scrub
brush moved in years later when the mowing stopped. Originally there was not
going to be a dropdown right before Cardiac Hill and hence there would be no Cardiac
Hill, they were going to skirt around it by going to the right and hook up to what is
now the JC inner circle of the course. When the day was done, Crystal Springs XC
Course had been born. The course is built on approximately 199 acres.
He is someone who I feared in high school but was inspired as a coach, who shared his knowledge and love of coaching & running with me. More pictures of Bob can be found here - RIP. Bob Rush Obit from San Mateo Daily.
The best weather the RustBuster Invite has ever had! Boys 100 saw some great early season marks while Amaya Bharadwaj (Paly) breaks the stadium record in the 3200 by 36 seconds with a 10:20.52 clocking. Pictures thanks to "The Duke" & Malcolm Slaney.
A history throwback for the day... Franklin Stadium in 1967, home of the Penn Relays. And link for Paly Coach Hod Ray (1921-1951) where he coached Football, BasketBall, Baseball & Track (the Paly field is named after him).
From 1977 where Carl Florant (Berkeley/Paly'73) is in full flight handing off to Keith Taylor in the 4x1. Carl is still ranked #11 with his 13.6h (13.93c) time in the 110HH on the All-Time CCS list.
1956 and this is what Stanford Univ looked like - Sunken Diamond, Angell Field, Campus. Lot's changed in 70 years.
Computers make End Of Season lists (all lists really) a breeze to maintain and distribute but back in the early 70's (and further back) you had to find a coach to volunteer to maintain the lists if the data was sent in. Here is a request from "said" coach to get "said" data.
The indoor tracks of today are a thing of beauty. Now let's go back to 1971 when some indoor tracks were made of DIRT (12 laps to the mile) and the stagger/race start lines were painted on the wall - check out this letter to T&F News.
Being at today's Los Gatos All-Comer meet brought me back to when brothers Rick & Leroy Milam used to help run these meets. Rick helped Willie Harmatz start these meets in 1979 and Leroy was a long time starter. Oh, and there was an American Mile Record Holder hanging around as well.
The All-NorCal team with the Grade Runners of the year displayed. Alijah Murillo (Branham), Cooper Stream (Vacaville), Elias Thronson (Davis), Liam Tassa (Mt View), Amaya Bharadwaj (Paly), Farah Allen (Branson), Ellison Williams (Turlock), Alyssa Gutierrez (St Francis-Sac)
